SUMMARY:DCI Event : "Science as Mastery" Viewing and Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Please join us on April 27\, 12-1 PM on zoom for a conversation on the new AAAS documentary entitled “Science as Mastery: A Story about Race and Power”. \nThe documentary has a duration of ~30 minutes so we will watch the documentary together and then Joe and Karis will lead a discussion in the remaining time. \nhttps://sciencereligiondialogue.org/resources/science-as-mastery-a-story-about-race-power/ \nFrom the AAAS Website – “This AAAS DoSER original short film\, “Science as Mastery: A Story about Race and Power\,” explores the intersection of the history of race\, religion\, and science as it relates to social structures and civil movements. Grounded in expert interviews\, the film begins with the religious arguments surrounding the 16th-century slave trade and ends with the backlash to the Genome Project in the 21st-century\, explaining how religious and scientific arguments of the past supported and shaped racist movements such as polygenism and eugenics. This challenging and moving short film opens the door for discussions of scientific racism of the past and present\, the use of religion and science as social tools\, the continuing impact of eugenics in society\, and the challenges of societal progress in the face of these histories.”
