Microorganisms in the built environment have direct and growing implications for human health, safety, and costs—ranging from hospital-acquired infections ($28B annually) to mold-related remediation ($17B+ annually, increasing with climate change). While harmful microbes drive risk and expense, emerging research shows that strategically supporting beneficial microbiomes can improve health outcomes and resilience.

PreMiEr is leading efforts to quantify “built-environment health,” identify actionable microbial targets, and lay the foundation for industry standards that enable practical solutions. We invite industry leaders to join the PreMiEr Industry and Advisory Summit to shape this roadmap, influence standards development, and forge partnerships that will transform risks into opportunities for innovation and competitive advantage.

Session 5: Regulatory Landscaping Workshop

The microbiome of the built environment (MoBE) is increasingly recognized as a critical factor influencing human health, sustainability, and indoor ecosystem function. While regulatory frameworks for indoor air quality have long been established, parallel considerations for surfaces, water systems, and other indoor reservoirs remain largely underdeveloped. This workshop brings together stakeholders from academia, industry, public health, and regulatory agencies to explore.

What is this workshop about?

Participants will engage in discussions on how microbial communities in air, water, and surface environments intersect with human well-being, building design, and public safety. Case studies highlighting lessons learned from air quality oversight will be used to inform forward-looking strategies for additional domains. By synthesizing scientific insights with regulatory perspectives, the workshop aims to catalyze new approaches to monitoring, standard-setting, and risk assessment tailored to the complexities of microbial life indoors.

Expected outcome

This workshop provides a timely platform to connect scientific insight with policy development, foster cross-disciplinary collaboration, and begin shaping a more comprehensive and resilient regulatory framework for the microbiome of the built environment (MoBE). Rob Donofrio, former Chief Scientific Officer, is leading a PreMiEr subcommittee focused on the regulatory landscape of emerging MoBE-related technologies. The subcommittee will distill key discussions and findings from this effort and publish them in a peer-reviewed journal.
