NC State Research: Not All Probiotics Help Gut Recovery After Antibiotics
NC State researchers find that not all probiotics are created equal, with some strains helping gut microbiome recovery after antibiotic treatment and others actually making it worse, depending on the specific strain used.
New research from North Carolina State University finds that different probiotic strains can either help or hinder the gut microbiome’s recovery following antibiotic treatment. In a mouse model, researchers compared two commonly used commercial Lactobacillus strains on resistance to Clostridioides difficile (C. diff) after antibiotic use. While L. gasseri promoted microbiome recovery and reduced C. diff colonization, L. acidophilus actually impaired recovery and increased infection risk. The findings underscore that probiotic efficacy is highly strain-specific and situational, and that more research is needed before blanket probiotic recommendations can be made.
