New PreMiEr Preprint: Probiotic Cleaners Show Promise Against Hospital Pathogens, But Evidence Remains Thin

A new systematic scoping review by PreMiEr researchers finds that probiotic cleaning solutions containing Bacillus species can reduce dangerous drug-resistant pathogens in healthcare settings and may lower rates of healthcare-acquired infections, performing as well or better than conventional disinfectants in some studies. However, the review, released as a preprint, finds that most existing study designs were weak and reporting was inconsistent across the literature. Researchers conclude that while probiotic cleaners are a promising infection control strategy, more rigorous randomized trials are needed before they can be recommended as a reliable alternative to standard disinfection.
