  • PreMiEr Spring 2025 Seminar Series- Dr. Amy Mathers, University of Virginia

Healthcare plumbing systems, including drains and toilets, can harbor anti-microbial resistant bacteria, posing a significant risk to patient safety. This seminar will explore the microbiology of these reservoirs, their role in pathogen transmission, and strategies to mitigate these risks. Using tools such as epidemiology, microbiome analysis, and whole-genome sequencing, we will examine how understanding these microbial ecosystems can inform innovative infection prevention approaches in healthcare environments.

  • PreMiEr Spring 2025 Seminar Series- Dr. Ameet Pinto, Georgia Institute of Technology

This talk will present hypotheses based on field data on potential ecological and physiological mechanisms underpinning the persistence and proliferation of the drinking water microbiome. These insights necessitate the development of novel approaches for holistic monitoring and management of the drinking water microbiome. This talk will also highlight ongoing work on the development of low-cost optical-and DNA sequencing-based methods for real-time and quantitative characterization of microbial communities in drinking water systems.

  • PreMiEr Spring 2025 Seminar Series- Intellectual Property and Invention Disclosure

Developing cutting-edge technologies and effectively transitioning them into society are key success metrics for PreMiEr. A critical component of this process is understanding intellectual property (IP) and the invention disclosure process. Properly handling IP ensures that innovations emerging from our research community are protected, commercialized, and leveraged for societal impact. This seminar aims to equip faculty, researchers, and graduate students with foundational knowledge about IP, its protection, and best practices for invention disclosure. We hope it will provide valuable insights and practical guidance on how researchers can successfully navigate the IP landscape and contribute to the commercialization of their innovations. We look forward to an engaging and informative discussion!
